Desmond was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1914. She was a successful businesswoman and community activist. On November 8, 1946, she went to see a movie at the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. However, she was refused a seat in the whites-only section of the theatre. Desmond refused to leave and was arrested and charged with attempting to defraud the theatre by trying to pass herself off as a white woman.
Desmond's trial became a national sensation. She was found guilty and fined $20. However, she refused to pay the fine and appealed her conviction. Desmond's case went all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada, but she lost her appeal.
Despite the setback, Desmond's case helped to raise awareness of racial discrimination in Canada. It also inspired other Black Canadians to stand up for their rights. In 1983, Desmond was awarded the Free Download of Canada, the highest civilian honor in Canada. She died in 1993, but her legacy continues to inspire Canadians today.
In 2018, the Bank of Canada announced that Desmond would be featured on the new $10 bill. She is the first Black woman to be featured on Canadian currency.
