Early Life

Nzingha was born in 1583 in the Ndongo kingdom. Her father, Ngola Kiluanji Kia Samba, was the king of Ndongo. Nzingha was a intelligent and ambitious woman, and she quickly rose to prominence in her father's court. In 1624, she became the queen of Ndongo after her father's death.

Resistance to Portuguese Colonialism

The Portuguese had been trying to colonize Angola for over a century, and by the time Nzingha became queen, they had made significant progress. Nzingha was determined to resist the Portuguese, and she led her people in a series of wars against them. The Portuguese were a powerful enemy, but Nzingha was a skilled military strategist, and she was able to defeat them on several occasions.

In 1657, Nzingha signed a peace treaty with the Portuguese. The treaty gave the Portuguese control of the coastal areas of Angola, but Nzingha retained her independence in the interior. Nzingha continued to rule Matamba until her death in 1663.
