About the Author

John Day was born in England in 1825. He went to sea at the age of 14 and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1846, he was serving as first mate on the merchant ship Governor Phillip when it was shipwrecked off the coast of Australia. Day and his fellow survivors spent nine months stranded on the remote coast before they were finally rescued.

After his rescue, Day returned to England and wrote an account of his ordeal. The book, which was published in 1847, was a bestseller and made Day a national hero. Day went on to have a successful career as a merchant captain and shipbuilder.
