Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German Lutheran pastor and theologian who became a leading figure in the Confessing Church, a movement within German Protestantism that opposed the Nazi regime. Bonhoeffer was arrested by the Gestapo in 1943 and executed in 1945. He is considered one of the most important Christian martyrs of the 20th century.

Bonhoeffer was born in Breslau, Germany, in 1906. He studied theology at the universities of Tübingen, Berlin, and Union Theological Seminary in New York City. After graduating from Union Seminary, Bonhoeffer returned to Germany and became a pastor in the German Evangelical Church.

In 1933, the Nazi Party came to power in Germany. The Nazis quickly began to suppress opposition to their regime, including the Confessing Church. Bonhoeffer was one of the leaders of the Confessing Church, and he spoke out against the Nazis' anti-Semitism and their persecution of the Jews.
