The Early Years
Bill Clinton was born in Hope, Arkansas, in 1946. His father died in a car accident three months before he was born, and his mother remarried when he was four. Clinton grew up in a small town, and he was a bright and ambitious child. He attended Georgetown University and Yale Law School, and he worked as a law professor before entering politics.
In 1978, Clinton was elected governor of Arkansas. He served five terms as governor, and he was known for his progressive policies and his ability to work with both Democrats and Republicans. In 1992, Clinton was elected president of the United States. He was the first baby boomer to be elected president, and he was the first Democrat to be elected president since Jimmy Carter in 1976.
The Clinton Presidency
Clinton's presidency was a time of both great progress and great turmoil. The economy grew steadily during Clinton's time in office, and the unemployment rate fell. Clinton also signed into law the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA),which created a free trade zone between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, Clinton's presidency was also marked by the Lewinsky scandal and the impeachment proceedings that followed. In 1998, Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives for perjury and obstruction of justice. However, he was acquitted by the Senate, and he remained in office.
Despite the Lewinsky scandal and the impeachment proceedings, Clinton left office with high approval ratings. He is generally regarded as one of the most successful presidents in American history.
