The Legend of the Thousand Paper Cranes

The legend of the thousand paper cranes is a Japanese folktale. It is said that if a person folds 1,000 paper cranes, their wish will be granted. The legend is often associated with Sadako Sasaki, who folded cranes in the hope of recovering from leukemia.

The legend of the thousand paper cranes has its roots in the Shinto religion. In Shinto, cranes are considered to be sacred birds. They are often associated with good luck, longevity, and happiness. The act of folding paper cranes is also seen as a way to bring good fortune and ward off evil spirits.

Sadako Sasaki's Story

Sadako Sasaki was born in Hiroshima, Japan, on January 7, 1943. She was two years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on her city. Sadako and her family survived the bomb, but they were all exposed to radiation. In 1954, Sadako was diagnosed with leukemia. The doctors told her that she had only a year to live.

Sadako was determined to fight her illness. She began folding paper cranes in the hope that if she completed 1,000, her wish for peace would be granted. She folded cranes from any piece of paper she could find, including candy wrappers and school notebook paper. With the help of her friends and family, she eventually completed 1,000 cranes. However, her wish for peace was not granted. Sadako died on October 25, 1955, at the age of 12.

The Legacy of Sadako Sasaki

Sadako Sasaki's story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. Even in the face of unimaginable suffering, she found hope and meaning in her life. Her story has inspired people around the world, and her paper cranes have become a symbol of peace and hope.

In 1958, a statue of Sadako was erected in Hiroshima Peace Park. The statue depicts her holding a golden crane. The crane is a symbol of peace, and it is also a reminder of Sadako's hope for a world without war.
