A visionary social reformer, agricultural expert, and astute politician, Sir Chhotu Ram left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire generations.

Early Life and Education

Chhotu Ram was born on October 24, 1881, in the village of Garhi Sampla in Rohtak district, Punjab (now Haryana). His father, Chaudhary Ram Singh, was a prosperous farmer and a respected elder in the community. Growing up in a traditional Jat family, Chhotu Ram received a basic education in Persian and Urdu. However, his thirst for knowledge extended far beyond the confines of formal schooling.

Influence of Arya Samaj

As a young man, Chhotu Ram came into contact with the Arya Samaj, a Hindu reform movement founded by Swami Dayanand Saraswati. The Arya Samaj's emphasis on social equality, education, and service to society deeply resonated with Chhotu Ram and shaped his future endeavors.

He played a pivotal role in the passage of several landmark legislations, including the Punjab Tenancy Act (1920) and the Punjab Agricultural Produce Markets Act (1939),which protected the interests of tenants and farmers.

Agricultural Development

Chhotu Ram was deeply committed to the development of agriculture in Punjab. He introduced modern farming techniques, promoted cooperative societies, and established agricultural banks. Under his leadership, Punjab became known as the "Granary of India." He is also credited with the construction of the Bhakra Dam, one of the largest dams in the world, which brought irrigation to millions of acres of land.

Social Reforms

Beyond his political and agricultural achievements, Chhotu Ram was also a passionate social reformer. He campaigned against untouchability, promoted education for girls, and worked to improve the living conditions of the rural poor. He founded numerous orphanages, schools, and hospitals, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to serving the marginalized.

Autobiography

In 1943, Chhotu Ram published his autobiography, "My Life and Times," which provides a fascinating account of his life, struggles, and achievements. The autobiography offers a glimpse into the mind and heart of a true leader who dedicated his life to the betterment of society.
