**Chapter 1: The Early Picts**
The Picts were a group of Celtic people who lived in Scotland from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages. They were known for their fierce warriors and their distinctive body art.
The Picts were first mentioned in Roman writings in the 1st century AD. The Romans called them the "Picti" which means "painted people." This is because the Picts decorated their bodies with blue paint or woad.
The Picts lived in small farming communities and were ruled by a number of different chiefs. They were often at war with the Romans and with each other.
In the 9th century, the Picts were finally defeated by the Vikings. The Vikings then ruled Scotland for over 200 years.
