About the Author

Robert Byron (1905-1941) was a British travel writer and historian. He is best known for his classic travelogue First Russia, Then Tibet, which recounts his adventurous journey through Russia and Tibet in the early 1930s. Byron was a gifted writer with a keen eye for detail and a wonderful sense of humor. His writing has been praised for its vividness, wit, and insight.

Byron was born in London in 1905. He studied at Eton College and Oxford University. After graduating from Oxford, Byron worked as a journalist and travel writer. In 1933, he published his first book, First Russia, Then Tibet. The book was a critical and commercial success, and it established Byron as one of the leading travel writers of his generation.

In 1941, Byron was killed in action during the Second World War. He was serving as a war correspondent for The Times when he was killed by a German bomb.
