An Epic Tale of Enterprise and Empire

China Bound: John Swire & Sons and Its World, 1816-1980 is a sweeping historical narrative that chronicles the rise and fall of one of the most influential British trading companies in China. Through the lens of the Swire family, the book offers a unique perspective on the complex and often tumultuous relationship between Britain and China over two centuries.

From its humble beginnings as a small trading house in Liverpool, John Swire & Sons grew into a global enterprise with a vast network of businesses across Asia. The company played a pivotal role in the development of Hong Kong, Shanghai, and other major Chinese cities, and its ships carried goods and people between East and West for over a century.

China Bound draws on a wealth of archival research and firsthand accounts to tell the story of John Swire & Sons and its world. The book is a vivid and engrossing read, providing a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Swire family and the many people who worked for them. It is also a valuable contribution to the historical literature on British imperialism in China.
