Mae Jemison was born in Decatur, Alabama, on October 17, 1956. Her parents were sharecroppers, and she grew up in a small, rural community. Despite the challenges she faced, Jemison was a bright and ambitious child. She loved to read and learn, and she dreamed of one day becoming a doctor.

After graduating from high school, Jemison attended Stanford University, where she earned a degree in chemical engineering. She then went on to Cornell University Medical College, where she earned her medical degree. After completing her medical training, Jemison worked as a doctor in Los Angeles for several years.

In 1992, Jemison was selected to be a NASA astronaut. She was the first African American woman to be selected for the astronaut program, and she went on to become the first African American woman to travel to space.

Jemison's first spaceflight was on the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992. She spent eight days in space, and she conducted experiments on the effects of microgravity on the human body. Jemison's second spaceflight was on the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1994. She spent seven days in space, and she helped to repair a satellite.

After her second spaceflight, Jemison retired from NASA. She went on to work as a professor at Cornell University, and she founded the Jemison Group, a company that provides educational programs for children and adults.

Mae Jemison is a role model for us all. She shows us that anything is possible if we set our minds to it. Her journey from poverty and prejudice to the space shuttle is an inspiration to us all, and her story reminds us that we can achieve anything we can dream.
