According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),over 42,000 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2020. This represents a 3.6% increase over the previous year and the highest number of traffic fatalities since 2005.

A significant contributing factor to this increase is the rise in risk-taking behavior among drivers. Speeding, tailgating, and running red lights are all examples of risky driving behaviors that can have deadly consequences.

Aggressive driving is another major problem on our roads. Aggressive drivers are often characterized by their anger, impatience, and disregard for the safety of others. They may tailgate, cut off other drivers, or make threatening gestures.

Distracted driving is also a major concern. In 2020, over 3,142 people were killed in crashes involving distracted drivers. Distracted driving can take many forms, including talking on the phone, texting, or eating while driving.

The combination of risk-taking, aggression, and distraction is creating a dangerous epidemic on our roads. These behaviors are putting everyone at risk, whether they are drivers, passengers, pedestrians, or cyclists.

There are a number of things that can be done to address this problem. First, we need to educate drivers about the dangers of risk-taking, aggression, and distraction. Second, we need to make our roads safer by improving engineering and enforcing traffic laws more strictly.

Finally, we need to change the culture of driving in this country. We need to create a culture where safe driving is valued and rewarded.

The epidemic of risk, aggression, and distraction on our roads is a serious problem that demands our attention. We cannot afford to continue to ignore this problem. We must take action now to make our roads safer for everyone.

Here are some additional resources on this topic:
